BIOGRAPHY

TOM VAN DEN HEUVEL
Drummer | Educator | Session & Touring Musician Tom van den Heuvel (born 1968) is an internationally experienced drummer, educator, and session musician whose career spans decades of global touring, award-winning recordings, and collaborations with world-class artists across multiple genres.

Tom began playing drums at the age of six and quickly established himself as a standout performer throughout high school, performing in numerous bands and musical productions. His professional journey took a decisive international turn at eighteen, when he was selected for the renowned global educational and musical program Up With People. Touring worldwide for two years, Tom first joined as a student performer (drummer) and later advanced to staff as a Production Assistant Music/Instrumental, where he was responsible for maintaining and overseeing the musical quality of the entire show.
Following his world tour experience, Tom continued his formal education at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, where he studied contemporary rock and pop drumming. There he trained under Bob Tamagni and John Ramsey, and attended masterclasses by legendary drummers Jim Chapin and Dave Weckl. During this period, Tom performed extensively on television shows across the United States and Canada and collaborated with a wide range of top-tier musicians and industry professionals.
His international collaborations include work with:

  • Whynot Jansveld (bassist for Richard Marx, Gavin DeGraw, Natasha Bedingfield, The Wallflowers)

  • Martin Verdonk (percussionist for Santana, Steve Winwood, Prince)

  • Coen Molenaar (keyboardist for Jan Akkerman, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Randy Brecker)

  • Scott Appleton (Rock guitarist and guitartech for Rush)

  • Larry Vodapivic (tech for Rush, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi)

  • Marc Anthony Thomas (Holiday on Ice)

  • Lisa Meneley (US Rock guitarist) and Lynn Morris (top Broadway choreographer) and many others.

Upon returning to the Netherlands, Tom became one of the most in-demand drummers for both Dutch and international artists, performing on national and international tours. His exceptional versatility allows him to perform and record across a broad spectrum of styles, including (hard) rock, pop, fusion, country, funk, soul, classical, and schlager.
In addition to live performances, Tom recorded jingles for national radio and television broadcaster Veronica, and later signed a record deal with EMI Holland for his single “Jij bent mijn Ziel” (“You Are My Soul”).
In 2011, Tom played drums on Susan Albers’ debut album “Who Am I”, which achieved major recognition at the 29th German Rock and Pop Awards in Wiesbaden. The album earned:

  • 2nd place for Best English-Language Album

  • 1st place for Best Singer/Songwriter

  • 1st place for Best Pop Band

  • 1st place for Best Pop Singer

—making it one of the most celebrated releases at Germany’s largest pop and rock awards event.

Beyond performing, Tom is the founder and owner of the highly respected and successful Dutch popschool “Drums & Dance”, where he mentors the next generation of musicians. He is a respected drum teacher, session and studio musician, and clinician.
Tom has been endorsed by Skygel Damping Pads, Ahead Sticks, and Armor Cases, and until the end of 2023 served as an endorser and clinician for Taye Drums, Dream Cymbals, Facus Sticks, and DG Cajons.
Currently, Tom is the drummer for ROXX, while remaining active as a session musician and educator. His recent and ongoing collaborations include performances with:

  • Willi Meyer (Germany/Mallorca – Gold Record Artist), alongside Ian Stewart (Supertramp), Norbert Fimpel (Joe Cocker), and Ivan St. Yves (Lou Vega – Mambo No. 5)

  • Susan Albers (Yamaha Artist, DSDS), with bassist Jonathan Ihlenfeld Cuniado (Anika Nilles, Trilok Gurtu)

  • Dutch multi-gold and international platinum record artist Berdien Stenberg

Tom’s playing is deeply influenced by drumming legends Simon Phillips, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Gadd, resulting in a powerful yet musical style defined by precision, feel, groove, and adaptability.
